What do you make of that,as of midnight tonight the Government will own and run Scunthorpe steel works,

The government will be paying for Australian coke,

Although i reckon they are on it already.

I don't yet have enough information to make anything of it.
I've seen the opinion expressed on Twitter that it shows how easy it is to nationalise industries where appropriate, and they should do water, energy and transport as well.
I would add the Post Office to the list...

I don't know enough either, but looked like the only way to save steel making in the UK.

Ironic really, when nationalisation was ruled out for steel in Motherwell and oil refining in Grangemouth....as they were in private hands...

reworked steel ie eletric arc furnace is ok for many jobs, but for making high quality, high strength and "specialist" steel for rail tracks, military armour, gun barrels etc freshly refined blast furnace steel is the place to start(then add specific amounts of trace elements to give the required properties)

mild steel made out of old bean cans and car bodies would not last well as rail lines, bridge parts, turbine towers or make a decent knife, apc etc

hydrogen reduced virgin steel is the future, we need to nationalise energy and make that economically viable and greenish

virgin steel making is a bit of a niche industry, steel reworking produces more bulk

the chinese firm had nothing to gain from doing it here, china has a significant modern and efficient first use steel making capacity at home and they are happy to pop it on a boat or train for money

_________________________

the performative aspect
steel making is a very tiny part of the uk economy but like fish and coal has a cultural legend that can be politically exploited

------------------------------

4000 wages and those in associated supply chains are significant to scunthorpe
they would be expensive as rustbelt welfare payments, and all the other issues of areas that lose a major employer

ps the reworking arc furnaces at port talbot can do the reworking one they are built, but scunthorpe is the only virgin capacity in the uk until a decent hydrogen plant is built

Your not wrong there,£700 million`s worth of coke has been ordered from Japan, maybe its a shorter time journey than from Australia which takes 47 days apparently,

The end of last year when Margam/Port Talbot steel works closed the blast furnaces and the coking plant, where coking coal was cooked and the gases given off generated electricity for the plants use,and the deep harbour alongside where all materials were shipped in.

Scunthorpe has none of this, hence more cost on the steel made.
