What's the crack?

I've just bought a new PC but am still on my laptop while I wait for a Vista compatable modem. This is not a major problem for me all part of getting a new PC.

People keep telling me it's no good. Some have said it is good.

In the words of Hale and Pace......"I'm confused".

I don't know much about IT stuff but like what I've seen of Vista

I need some advice.

Why don't people like it?

Is it going to be the Beta-Max of the computer world and if so is it easy to reinstall XP.

One thing I am sure about is that these two guys where never funny.

I like it. But I'm not a techie. I just find it easy to use.

We've just bought a desktop and moved heaven and earth to make sure it had XP. Vista uses huge amounts of memory, lots of hardware doesn't yet have drivers for it and I'd rather wait until the second or third service pack irons out all the bugs and wrinkles, as happened with XP.

I have brand new high speed/high spec laptop in work. I'm using vista because I need to be competent with the new o/s.

However, it's slower than xp on my 3 year old toshiba laptop.

When I bought a PC a few months back, I made sure I got one with XP rather than Vista.

Really hate what I've seen/used of Vista on other folk's PCs/

I've just bought a brand new £700 PC, I haven't noticed it being slow.
The geek who sold it to me said it had all the space a home user would ever need. I said to him he's just trying to make a sale (joking), he said (serious) he didn't really care if I bought a computer there or not.

I took his word for it given his honesty.

I think vista is fine if you want a computer you have no control over and have the hardware which is up to spec

if you want to beable to have a greater level of access to the programs that run and how they run then it isn't necessarily great

if all you need is internet and browsing it isn't necessarily as bad as made out but I suspect once it develops a significant fault it might be more difficult to deal with than XP was but on a brand new pc that shouldn't happen for some time

We need it for music, DVD, internet, photo's and office stuff for our business. PC world do a check up on the machine every so often so I think for what we want it for, we will be fine. The seem to have picked it up O.K.

That is the key for me. I'll stick with XP and Win98 for my current needs thank you very much. I've heard so many bad report about Vista - the latest monster from microSoft.

Everyone said exactly the same things about XP when it came out as they're saying about Vista now though.

And people always will.

The thing is I've heard that Vista is not very stable. On the other hand XP is said to be the most stable version of windows to date. I still rate my win98 system as more efficient as it rarely ever crashes unlike my XP laptop.

Some would say that that bit in bold is just as big an issue.

Linux is the answer.
What was the question again?

Yes, but the bugs got fixed and the average specification of the pc's caught up.

2gig memory and 256mb graphics cards aren't standard. But if you want the full 'experience' then you need to be at that level.

Our son has been struggling with Vista, he tried to alter something obscure and the shole thing collapsed on him

I reported ages back about how a friend had a amlware trashed Vista within days of getting it

It still is not compatible with loads of hardware

It takes absurd amounts of power

There is nothing earth shaking in terms of security or ease of use that would help do what is needed with computers, which is to make them far more of an on/off change channel domestic appliance

The file system is still a legacy ridden foul up, based on concepts that were outdated in 1985

We are talking about a system that represents a terminal case of bloat as they add more and more layers of new paint to a flawed system that was bad enough before the internet, but which has become about as useful as a papier mache safe depostit box in the face of internet security issues.
