Can you dry tomatoes with these things?

Just thinking about dealing with a glut of tomatoes this summer (I hope), and sundried tomatoes are very expensive,

Peter.

I always used to do them in a low oven. I am sure the dehydrator will be better at ti.

Well, mine is currently lost, two weeks after ordering I sent an email to Tchibo asking where it is, no reply. Today I phoned, 5 minutes on the phone on a national rate (ie they make a profit) number. Only to be told that the helpdesk will call me back within 48 hours.

Largely appalling service (as my letter to their customer services will inform them) so if anyone else is thinking of getting them I recommend you keep a sharp eye out on what happens to your order. I did think I shouldn't have bothered ordering it.

sorry to hear you're having troubles with them bugs

i don't think i'd buy other stuff from them BUT this is such a good deal on the dehydrator. i got my dehydrator and the dehydrator cook book today as well as my sewing book... it's been like several christmases all rolled into one today! i was drooling over the gorgeous fabrics at our locally owned fabric store this morning. they are an indian family and they carry all that gorgeous matrials the indian woman use for their sari's... i was just in heaven, had to touch everything

now i'm torn between sewing and dehydrating, fortunately there's a long wait for the finished products drying so i should be able to tear myself away from that book and get on with some sewing... WOOHOO!!!

i LOVE my dehydrator!!! i'm cutting and pasting bits of a post i left on the mse forums for you!

The long and short of it is that hubbie and two daughters absolutely loved the coating. Now I don't want to keep on buying these as I'd like healthier and cheaper alternatives (I used two packets to coat the wedges).>>

have you tried dehydrating food and then grinding it into your own powder mixes?

i have a dehydrator that I got from Tchibo and i love it! you can do it in the oven if you like on the lowest heat settings but you'll have to keep a close eye on things and you'll be limited to how much you can do at one time.

i recently made a mixture of dried red pepper, onion, garlic, chives, and tomato. to this i added a bit of salt, a touch of pepper and a small bit of chilli powder (which i can make for myself in the future if i choose) this mix is great on loads of things, very tasty. i even use it on my dried veg crisps!

i've made a salad mix of dried tomato, onion, rocket, watercress, cucumber, green pepper and courgette. this is for use in my bread machine instead of buying those expensive bread mixes or buying those bread machine seasoning packets that alinsons makes. everything i used for this lot was going to go off so i actually saved money by using it all, it would have otherwise gone in the bin.

i also make fruit/yogurt leathers, veg crisps, apple crisps and i'll be making jerky soon (i used to make it years ago mmmmm)

i highly recommend Mary Bell's Complete Dehydrator Cookbook ISBN: 0688130240 it's amazing what you can make! also, if you use a juicer you can use the pulp mixed with a few tablespoons of juice to make fruit leathers that are every bit as tasty as sweets!

i'm making all sorts of powders now and it's fantastic when we find a big bunch of reduced veg because i know that i can use it all up. i'm snacking on my veg crisps as i type (sweet potato, parsnip and beetroot). the powders are really nice because you can sneak a bit of veg in with your childrens dinner and they'll never know it i am now making dried soup mixes for my dh.

i'm also storing up on food we can take camping with us for this summer. the cookbook i recommend gives recipes to make up using all the items she tells you how to dry. normally i don't encourage people to have another gadget in their kitchen but if you want to stay off the dry mixes and save money then definately get the dehydrator it will save you money in the long run and you may never have to throw anything away again (she has instructions for dehydrating leftovers!!!)

Where on Tchaibo was the dehydrator? I put 'dehydrator' into their search engine and got nothing. I have one already, but it was one of Martins cast offs and has seen better days- was curious to how the Tcaibo one compared, but I canna find it

Oooh well get you

Indeed, mine still hasn't turned up. Clearly the Devon, Wiltshire and er where are you Buttery? Scotland? carriers are much bigger, stronger and better educated than these soft Southern ones, too busy with their dreams of fame and drug dealing to actually DELIVER SOMETHING THEY'VE BEEN PAID TO DELIVER.

So I now have to phone up the company AGAIN on their 0870 number and arrange a second delivery. Oh I'm looking forward to that.

Sorry to rant. You don't need to know. I honestly do think it has a lot to do with the delivery companies down here who are rubbish at everything, but equally it's up to the supplier to realise that and make allowances for it. Perhaps I'll just try the oven on its lowest setting after all. Actually it would probably have been quicker to build my own - including drilling for oil, processing through to the plastic, taking a short course in electrical engineering and design, and applying for my own patent.

I hope people will understand if I say

it's really great once you get it though so i hope it does get sorted out for you in the end...

you should be able to do the same recipes that i've mentioned using the oven but you'll have to keep a closer eye on them. maybe you could make a solar dryer since it's getting warmer!

Quite rightly so too. It really makes me fed up when nearly everything I buy becomes a saga. Fortunately this seems to be the exception to the rule so far.

Ohh, bless.....
Actually in my experience the courier companies here are effin useless too. Richer Sounds seem to use a really efficient one, but there's a limit to the quantities of stuff you can order just for the pleasure of seeing it turn up when it's supposed to.

Thanks

It probably sounds petty when there are so many things more important in the world; on the other hand I'm not exactly complaining about little craftsman at the corner of the road.

Today I've phoned them up as arranged to request a return call so that I don't have to pay an 0870 fee.

"We can't make outgoing calls, it's incoming calls only".

"Can you check my account, there should be a note".

"We can't make outgoing calls, it's incoming calls only".

I think a refund will be in order. I won't be recommending Tchibo to anyone. Had you guessed that?
