Our son has recommended to stay away from Dell, why?

Can't recommend any but can explain a bit about Dell. I've had problems with them in the past but, to be fair, as they are such a large company you're bound to find people who're not happy with them. From the reviews I've seen their PCs and laptops in general seems just as reliable as most companies. From my personal experience it wasn't the fact the PC they shipped broke down after a couple of days that upset me but the poor service I received when trying to resolve the problem. I gather things have improved since then but worth tracking down recent experiences.

By mid price range, how much do you mean?

Both at home and at work I've found that I've got good deals with Asus laptops. Good quality machines that seem stable and fast.

I think brand matters less these days as compared to specs. Hit some of the dreaded out of town stores and try them out. Go for a dual core processor and don't be talked into buying one of the ridiculous laptop trays - all you need is a normal laptray like wot you might eat your dinner off.

If I had £300/£400 to spend on a new laptop I would get something like this:

Acer Aspire 5542

Your best bet would be to go to a shop and have a look to see what you fancy and then see if you can get it online for cheaper.

As Stewy said, Acer are fine.

My personal preferences are either Sony or HP.

I think HP are changing their model range at the moment. There's a lot of pretty high spec HP gear around at low prices, so if you're not bothered about what colour it is...

Wot Cab said. I bought this one a few months back for 400 quid and it's the mutt's doodahs. Discontinued now, by the looks of it, but there's probably a new version available. Make sure you buy a USB mouse (six quid when I bought the lappy), cos laptop mousepads are the work of Satan.

Mid priced was part of the specification. If it wasn't then a MacBook Air would be my recommendation with Parallels to run Windows/Linux.

Price is the crunch I think. This iMac is probably going to be the first and last Mac that I own. Though actually that's also partly because Apple have the worst customer service of anyone that I've ever dealt with. By a very, very, very long way.
Shame. The actual product is great.

As one who tends to go through a laptop a year, I wouldn't reccomend Dell. Good desktops, but their laptops are very cheaply built and didn't even last a year!
Toshiba are good, HP are about the same, but my reccomendation would be to buy the best Samsung you can afford.

Acers are shit. Having to back up the HD to make it a worthy product is not a good idea. Like saying a certain plane is fine, as long as you pack a parachute.
