I've been reading about it on the Amazon site and was wondering, does anyone know if the apps that you will be able to get on there will be similar to the Andriod based tablets?

Thanks.

Coincidentally I was looking at those this morning and did notice that they advertise a 'buy once run anywhere' principle to their software and media promoting portability between devices and specifically mentioned Kindle and Android. Whether that referred to all apps and media or just some I don't know.

What I really wanted to know was could I get the Britannica and a more readable version of the Times on a new Kindle but I couldn't find an answer to that.

Haven't got one, but I had a good play with one the other day, I was seriously impressed and would have one if funds permitted.

Got one. Love it.

The only thing I need to get is the fast charger thing, but there is no rush, I just plug it in in the daytime whilst I am getting on with work, and it is ready for me later.

We bought the standard fire for the youngest.

She loves it. It gets some serious usage. Even using it for cooking recipes. Since getting it I dont think she has used the laptop for anything apart from school work.

We bought the fast charger too a few weeks later as they dropped the price quite a lot.

With real usage the battery life is way shorter than quoted.

My daughter bought herself one with her first paycheck from her PhD and she really loves it. She has been showing it off and we are all suitably impressed!

What's the battery life like? The Fire looks more usable in terms of having better support for magazines / newspapers / illustrations but also looks like it might eat batteries and very long battery life is one great advantage of the standard kindle.

If its anything like the iPad, life will depend hugely on the screen brightness. With a bright screen mine lasts several hours, at its most dim, it'll last days between charges.

One of my friends got a Kindle Fire HD. He thinks it is little weird that he can't use the normal Google Play store. Yet, you can load any android application file. The sound is excellent for a tablet .
