The "basic" one is officially called the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) Foundation Food Hygiene Certificate.
Check your local tech.
Expect 6 to 9 hours.
And everyone passing.

For example https://www.yorkcollege.ac.uk/web/lllcd.nsf/pages/Cieh_Foundation_Food_Hygiene_Certificate

I'm trying to find one local to me at the moment. I've seen them advertised as a distance learning course (around 8 hours) online too, but haven't investigated this option.

I've been trying to get the Job Centre to sort me out this course as well, and finally last signing I spoke to someone who was a bit more on the ball and referred me to Learn Direct, who do courses in conjunction with on of the local colleges.

As Food Hygeine counts as vocational, they may work with a college near you.

I've heard that (in Scotland, but perhaps an equivalent elsewhere) you can fund the cost of a Food Hygiene Cert course by accessing you Individual Learning Account (ILA). Otherwise, up here it costs about £75.
