Defra Statistical release
THE ENVIRONMENT IN YOUR POCKET 2005

The Environment in your Pocket 2005, the annual booklet that makes environmental trends and statistics readily accessible on issues including climate change, air quality, water quality, land use, waste and recycling and wildlife, is published today by Defra.

It includes several environmental indicators of sustainable development, and contains analysis of links between indicators on the economy, transport, energy use, and emissions of pollutants. This year there is also a special section looking at the relationship between agriculture and the environment.

Examples include:

Recent climate change scenarios predict that UK winters will be come wetter and summers drier, with summer rainfall in the south east of England possibly declining by up to 50 per cent by the 2080s
Of the 25 million tonnes of waste collected by local authorities from households in England during 2003/4, 18 per cent was recycled or composted
Between 1998 and 2004 the area of land in the UK under crops fell by 8 per cent, the area of grassland rose by 3 per cent and the area under set-aside increased by almost 80 per cent
Emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) fell by 41 per cent between 1980 and 2003 to 1,560 thousand tonnes, compared with the EU National Emissions Ceiling Directive target for 2010 of 1,167 thousand tonnes
Between 1994/5 and 1999/2000 leakage from the water supply system - from the distribution network and householders' supply pipes - in England and Wales fell from 228 litres to 139 litres per property per day, but has risen since, and in 2003/4 leakage was 154 litres per property per day
Radioactive emissions to the air in the UK fell by around 76 per cent between 1985 and 2003 and emissions to water fell by 82 per cent
Between 1990 and 2004 the percentage of electricity generated from renewable resources in the UK increased from 1.8 to 3.6 per cent
In 2003, environmental protection expenditure by UK industry was estimated to be £3.4 billion, environmental protection expenditure by the public sector was estimated to be £4.9 billion.

2. The 2005 edition is the ninth annual edition of the booklet and it presents around 60 of the key data sets from the e-Digest of Environmental Statistics. It focuses on providing trends over time, including on performance against quantified targets and commitments set at the national and international level.

3. As a National Statistics publication, it seeks to be as objective as possible, presenting a balanced picture. National Statistics are produced to high professional standards set out in the National Statistics Code of Practice. They are produced free from any political interference.

I thought you were referring to my 6 year old, already he's bringing home some early conkers from school - Mum is back to having to check small boys trouser pockets before washing ( with small boy removed from same 1st of course!) But, back to topic, sounds a noble book anyways

strangely enough i thought along those lines but it was the disgusting things i find lurking in mr nanny's trouser pockets after he had been outside with the animals for a while..............

and i concur - anything linked with DEFRA rarely works correctly
