Defra Press Release

WILDLIFE ACT CONSULTATION DEMONSTRATES SUPPORT FOR REVIEW PROPOSALS

Most respondents to a public consultation on wildlife legislation are in favour of reviewing the laws that protect individual wildlife species in England and Wales, according to a report published by Defra today.

Biodiversity Minister Jim Knight said the Government consulted on proposals arising from a strategic review of Part I of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, which is the principal piece of legislation covering the conservation and protection of birds, other animals, and plants.

"The Wildlife and Countryside Act is now more than twenty years old, so this review is an important part of ensuring that it operates effectively now and in the years ahead," he said.

"The consultation has shown that there is widespread support for the review of Part I of the Act, which deals with the protection of wildlife species."

Mr Knight said that several proposals raised in the consultation paper had already been carried forward through the Natural Environment and Rural Communities Bill, which is currently before Parliament.

"The ideas and issues raised by stakeholders during the consultation period were important in deciding the way those issues are dealt with in the Bill," he said.

"These proposed new laws, including providing greater protection for Golden Eagles, White-tailed Eagles and Ospreys, will make a significant contribution to good wildlife management and protecting important species."

Mr Knight said the Government would work with stakeholders to determine the best way to take forward the other proposals raised by the consultation.

The consultation paper asked for views on 27 specific proposals, along with comments on other issues.

Defra received 105 written responses to the consultation from other government departments, agencies, and advisory bodies, trade associations, NGOs and environmental bodies, local authorities, and individuals.

Notes for Editors

1. The review of Part I of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 was a Rural White Paper commitment to ensure that the legislation protecting native wildlife is up to date and remains fit for purpose.

2. The public consultation took place in England and Wales, because Scotland has already taken forward its amendments to the Act through the Nature Conservation (Scotland) Act 2004.

3. The consultation on the review of Part I was carried out between 20 December 2004 and 24 March 2005, and overlapped with consultations on the draft Natural Environment and Rural Communities Bill. The Bill contains a number of wildlife protection measures modelled on eight proposals contained in the review.

4. The analysis of responses can be found on the Defra website at www.defra.gov.uk/corporate/consult/wildlifeact-part1/index.htm.
