So how much would someone have to spend to get a gun and scope that is effective, powerful and accurate to shoot rabbit and pidgeon, I am talking air wepons here as FAC is not a route i would contemplate at the moment.
I know everyone out there will have a different favourite combo but , for example what size scope do you need, obviously the nearer the 12ftlb limit the better but precharged or break barrel, jus intrested on what the experts think the min average setup costs would be.

There's loads of kids who pay mega bucks for air rifles and then get tired with them. This means that there are plenty of bargains to be had in the second hand market.
I couldn't advise you on what there is out there now because the ones that I used and still use belong to a different generation.
In olden times I swore by Airsporters, some of the Webleys and the like.
The Germam ones, the Weirachts( wrong spelling) were what the posh boys had but these were damned heavy to carry around the fields all day.
The above mentioned were all spring powered guns.
I got my hands on an ungoverned Crossman which was just Dandy. It was small, light and very powerfull.
My oldest son has got a cabinet full of modern air weapons, bottled gas powered the lot.

Oh ! I nearly forgot, how much would I pay up for a reasonable air rifle and scope ? £100 to £150
For the top of the range jobbies you can pay mega bucks. You don't need them , get yourself somebodies cast off!
There are lads on here that will be able to point you in the right drection with regard to scopes and the like .

If I was you I'd start out with a BSA Lightning, light for a springa but easily got the minerals to bowl a bunny out to 35 yards, you can pick one up for about 100-150 quid. The trouble with PCP Rifles is the charging, though light, you can carry an AA S410 around all day and wont even notice it, you need a stirrup pump that will set you back another £100 and is bloody hard work!!!, or go for a divers bottle that will stand you in another 140 quid, plus 5-10 quid to have it refilled. they also need to be checked every 3 years or so.
Springa probs can get you into all sorts of trouble the worst is if you over oil them this can cause "dieseling" which can in some cases up the power beyond 12ftIlb and you
DONT want that! Also break barrel springa's suffer from wear on the cheeks

. which will effect the accuracy dramaticly.

Scopes, minefield mate! depends on what you want. Low light, IR, mil dot etc. I would go for a Hawke stalker 2-14-42 cost you around about 100 quid and a decent set of non creep mounts, you need them with a springa as the recoil slowly makes the scope slide backwards, so interfearing with your rig setting.

Anything else you want to know just ask.

i liked a webley vucan ,polished and chopped with a suppressor and heavey load , i wouldnt dream of having such a thing now break barrels are toys ,pre charged you could get 400 ft/lb 'phant gun go for a strong bit of kit ,look after it . hw 's are strong and can be tweaked easily to be legal without a fac . accurate is more of a criteria than power .

Sorry cant agree there mate. I had a HW85 that was a break barrel and you can no way say that was a toy. it spat out pellets at 11.9ftIlb and was responsible for the demise of hundreds of bunnies!

You dont want 12ftIlb you want under, 11.5 is fine. 12ft is bang on and too close for comfort. At 35 yards if you can obtain 1 inch groups then you are set.

Very good gun- but as a beginner I found the (slight) recoil quite hard to come to terms with at any distance over 20 yards. Went for the cheapest pre-charged I could and to be honest it was the best money I spent. Not that expensive given that I traded my lightning as well, and you can add a multi shot which is useful.

Not a big fan of PCP's got a AA S410K set up as a permenant night rig. But for daytime sorties I use my AA TX200HC its a springa and a cracking gun cannot fault it in any way. I also bought a AA pro sport simply because I like the look of it. But you need a fork lift to carry that around all day. so its up for grabs if anyone is interested.

New Webley Exocet + scope and pellets cost about £230. Scope was well worth the extra. I like this set-up. Works for me.

I bought an Air Arms 200TX HC (one of the best) second hand with a walnut stock and good scope, bag & pellets for £200
My PCP AA410K with a bottle, gauge, bage, scope etc cost around £400 (rifle and tank secondhand)

Personally I dont like break barrel rifles and prefer underlevers, you can get 200TX rifles second hand for around £150 upwards. I would always go the second hand route as long as you can inspect the rifle first. The mecca for second hand kit is https://www.airgunbbs.com/forums/index.php? its where I find most of my kit.
