I have posted this on RC website, but we are quite desperate, any suggestions here?

Our AGA is a solid fuel one. After many years of trial and error hubbs modified it by making a damper for the barrell thing. We have got it down to running on 2 bags of anchrocite a week. However we are finding it increasingly difficult to get the anthrocite delivered. Our coalmen seem to be disappearing. Last night was the coldest in ages and we really need to get the old girl fired up...fortunately it is not our main source of heat...we have oil fired central heating, but the AGA is in the kitchen and heats half the ground floor as well as the water and a couple of radiators. Any ideas what we could use as an alternative to the anthrocite whilst we sort out the coalman bit?

I don't know, but.... there's a bloke (I assume) who signs onto RC as Wild Kurt. IIRC he said something about working with Raeburns/Agas. He's got an email address on his profile, you could try him. Hope this helps, Sean

It may seem a daft idea but have you tried contacting the Aga makers? If you get the right person they can be very helpful. You could try phoning and ask to speak to a technical person. I'll also ask my mum as we has a Raeburn when I was a nipper. BTW, you don't have to be desperate to visit us here.

On our solid fuel Rayburn we used to use wood gathered from the hedges and woods. Paper, animal bones and fat also got chucked on. Charcoal would work as the garden centres must be giving it away at this time of year

right I'll tell you what parkray once told me use Coalite, but its not just Phurnacite there is also anthracite and just ask your coalman for any fuel for solid fuel central heating, also if you buy a bag of slack each week and put that on at night(coal dust) that keeps it slowly ticking over, throw your fuel on in the morning give it 10 mins then rake through (slack is about £2.50 for 50 kgs
